Bombilpec
(Alta Verapaz) |
Walk 40 min through sweltering corn fields and find this enormous cave well hidden under the shade of tropical rain forest. The sheer size of this green-lit basement makes a stunning contrast to the tiny leading cave, at the end of which you will find ancient Maya drawings.

Finca Paraiso
(Izabál) |
In Polochic rift valley there are many hot springs, but this beats all: Finca Paraiso operates a pool within a forest rest (Q10), where dozens of visitors squat in the water of a hot cascade. There is even a natural sauna cave. Do not come on weekends. Open from 7:00 to 17:00.

Rey Marcos Caves
(Alta Verapaz) |
The Rey Marcos cave is located above a bathing / picnic spot where a spring gushes forth from the mountainside into a series of pools and waterfalls. The cave contains some of the most beautiful decorations of any cave in Central America – huge stalagmites with filigree ornamentation in translucent stone, as if squeezed from a tube by a pastry chef. Unfortunately it has been soiled by too many visitors.

Sataña
(Alta Verapaz) |
Rene Chenal transformed finca Sataña into a paradise with helicoids, precious woods and other tropical species planted in a lawn area where you can commute back and forth between the river Sachichaj and swimming pools. The river has its turquoise water, forming a beautiful pool. Nice botanical hiking along the river through the forest.

Peña del Ángel
(Baja Verapaz) |
A gorge between two 500 m high cliffs (Peña del Angel) is the scenario for a rushing river and a guano-filled cave. A 1 ½ hrs walk with nice views of the Matanzas valley, preferably to visit during the dry season, since then you can walk up river over huge boulders. Only at noon hours is there sun in the gorge.

Mount Sacranix
(Alta Verapaz) |
A leisurely hike over the hills of Cobán. It leads into the Sacranix Rain Forests, an area of 1000 square miles without roads, divided by some of the most beautiful and adventurous rivers of Central America. Here exists the Quetzal, the Jaguar, but also sad monuments to Guatemala's civil war, which all but stripped the forests from human presence.
